What is Mohair?

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about mohair, this wonderful fiber that is unknown to most of us in terms of its origin and composition.

This amazing fiber comes from the Angora goat, which can be found in Turkey, Afghanistan, and Tibet.

Mohair means "the best fleece," and truly, it is. Anyone who has had the opportunity to knit with it will agree that it is a fiber from another planet.

Its main characteristics are its insulating properties, as the fiber is like a "tube" filled with air, which creates the same effect as a thermal panel. It is thin, smooth, and has a tremendous amount of shine.

The finest hair from young goats is used for hand knitting, while the hair from older goats is used for making high-quality carpets and upholstery.

Don’t be fooled by its fluffy appearance! Mohair is thermoregulating, meaning it keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Mohair needs to be paired with a "harder" fiber to provide structure and continuity. Often, polyester and acrylics are used, and in finer yarns, silk is incorporated.

Have you tried this fiber in your knitting projects? Share your thoughts in the comments and let us know if you'd like us to include it in our product catalog!

Until next time!

Happy knitting :)
